Wrapped in mystery and steeped in tradition, Kyoto is Japan’s cultural heartland – a place of teahouses and maikos, ornate temples and cherry blossoms. At its centre lies KYOTO YURA HOTEL NIJO JO BETTEI MGallery, a 5-star boutique hotel located on the southern periphery of Nijō Castle. It was from the halls of this legendary UNESCO World Heritage Site that the feudal Tokugawa Shogunate ruled Japan for over 250 years – and where the last shogun surrendered power to the emperor in 1867.

This privileged sanctuary, with only 25 rooms, is the creation of esteemed Japanese designer Yukio Hashimoto. His inspiration came from the samurai era that preceded the treaty of 1867, and from the rapid modernisation of Japan that came afterwards. From the outside, the hotel is a paean to the low-rise, minimalist architecture of the modern ryokan – a celebration of sleek stone, wood and glass. Inside, the traditional shoin-zukuri style of the samurais is resurrected in a layout that champions privacy while also bringing guests together around a spectacular central garden. The rock-cut lobby wall evokes the Edo Period castles of old.

The hotel is ideally located for exploring many of Kyoto’s top attractions, from Nijō Castle to the historic Gion district and the gourmets’ paradise that is Nishiki Market. And yet, it is also a self-contained hideaway, a haven where guests can discover the origins of the Japanese sense of beauty within its walls. In the lobby area, you are immersed in Kyoto’s innate elegance at a traditional tea ceremony accompanied by delicate namagashi sweets. Sleep sweetly amid the artisan decor of your exquisite bedroom, or discover fine Japanese-French fusion cuisine at Singular restaurant.

All spaces within the hotel are graced with panoramic views of the central garden, where slender maples, bamboos and other trees change colour with the seasons and serve as a reminder of the eternal nature of Kyoto itself.

Kyoto Yura Hotel Nijo Jo Bettei MGallery is located in central Kyoto, at the heart of a city so rich in culture that the US Secretary of War removed it from his list of bombing targets during World War Two. As such, its ancient teahouses, gardens, Buddhist temples and imperial palaces – built over more than a millennium as the Japanese capital – remain wondrously intact. Many are recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Nijō Castle, upon whose southern boundary our boutique hotel stands.

The castle was built in 1603 as the Kyoto residence of the first Tokugawa shogun. His descendants continued to rule from there until 1867, when they eventually relinquished power to the Japanese emperor. The treaty that formalised this shift was signed at Nijō-jo, and not long afterwards the imperial capital was moved from Kyoto to Tokyo.

Many other top Kyoto attractions are easily reachable from the hotel, including Kyoto Imperial Palace, Nishiki Market (dubbed Kyoto’s Kitchen) and the Gion district. In the latter, beautiful geiko and maiko can still be seen hurrying along streets – lined with kaiseki restaurants and traditional machiya houses – on the way to their next engagement. Our hotel offers several exclusive Memorable Moments, including a monk-led visit to areas of Mibu Temple that are usually closed to the public, and a morning worship experience at Takamatsu Shinmei, a 10th-century Shinto shrine.

The hotel is a one-minute walk from Nijōjō-mae subway station and approximately one hour by road from Osaka International Airport (ITM). If arriving by train, hotel staff will meet you on the platform at Kyoto Station.
